Four more Little Buddhas were added. I tried to capture scenes where children share their ups and downs of living with their special companions—horses.  Little Buddha: Sharing Plenty  Little Buddha: Compassion  Little Buddha: Special Delivery for Grandma. They will be carrying firewood on the backs.  Little Buddha: Jubilation

A customer asked me if I could make a sculpture like the one below. Constructing a bulk (like the horse’s body) on thin long legs is very difficult. The legs can crack easily. As the ceramic clay shrinks, the final product may wobble. In addition, the ancient artisan captured the wonderful interaction between the horse and the trainer. Only the way for me to come closer to that mastery is by trials and errors. I decided to make this my new project.  This piece was made more than a thousand years ago.  Draft horses have shorter legs. Their images were used for this piece.  Initially I put an old man on the horse, but why not change it to my signature character Little Buddha?  I like this horse better than the first one, as it looks more natural. What shall I put on his back? A sleeping Little Buddha.  A career advisor told me last fall that my next homework was to put together a presentation. I tried that at my opening reception, considering how to make it interactive, thought-provoking, and fun simultaneously. I could have done this only with help from many people. Thank you so much.  As the exhibit was about dementia, I asked the Alzheimer's Association to set an information desk.  The presentation opened with singing and dancing together "My Bonnie." Potters from Rapid City helped me lead this.  Everyone participated. Yay!  Followed by a slide show about me and my art. The speech also touched on our roles when loved ones developed dementia or became caregivers.  Leslie Morrow of the Alzheimer's Association gave us tips on how to become better caregivers or friends to someone living with dementia.  The Q&A was led by a humanities scholar Lawrence Diggs. I saw the exhibit for the first time 2 days ago. The curators had done a fantastic job putting the show together. It will be on until November. If any of you are traveling to the eastern South Dakota, please make time to go to see it.  As you entered the gallery, you'll see this.  The transparent boxes added elegance.  From my 2021 sculpture ....  .... to my latest. All together, 17 pieces are displayed there. |
