The Triangle Shirtwaist's story inspired this piece, recording the very moment that one of the Bangladesh girls hit the ground. They jumped to their deaths from the burning 11th floor, so that their families could recognize their bodies. It was their last voiceless cry to their employers. "Notice us! We are also  humans."

Twenty three years ago, I had a chance to stay with a Chinese family in NYC. The mother in her 50's spoke only a Chinese dialect. She worked in a garment shop in Chinatown, and usually returned home close to midnight. One night, she looked sad. She said to her daughter, "I don't speak Mandarin or English, but it does not mean I don't know how to count." She was paid only 10 cents per cuff, yet her employer was cheating on the counting of the cuffs.

I imagine that unfair labour conditions have not changed much there. Even in hidden corners of YOUR peaceful town, such tragedies may be occurring unnoticed. This should not be the reality of civilized societies.
