 Raccoons are believed to bring business success. I visit my home country, Japan, every two years. However, before this routine return trip, the prospect of learning new perspectives excited me far more than usual. In my youth, I felt suffocated by the conventional characteristics of rural Japan. I wonder if the very things I hated would now awake my sense of appreciation for the people. It has been 26 years since I left Japan, and I may be able to see their life more objectively. I am looking forward to learn about my own country from the new point of view.

Yoko dear, So glad to hear of your safe arrival. Just today I was thinking of you, wondering when we'd hear from you. By now you must be in Akita. Give my best regards to mother and Mr. Sugayo and send my best wishes to Keiko and the rest of the family back in Kyoto. Thank you for writing your blog. I'll be following it with great interest. I'm not at all surprised to hear of your newly developed appreciation for the people of Japan. Who could not have great respect for their perseverance in the face of catastrophe? Your people are stoic and resourceful. They have suffered, but they don't complain- they just carry on and try to resolve problems on their own. Ann, thanks for your feedback. Yes, I passed your best regards to mother. She has lost lots of weight. She's been having problems with her stomach and teeth, but she continues to work nonstop as usual. Mr. Sugayo is receiving a prestige reward for his dedications for the disabled. I did not know that he built, out of his pocket, a facility for the disabled. Today, I read an article about it on newspaper. Mother asked me to make a copy of the article and take it to the family Buddhist alter, so that Takao and his deceased wives could see it. Mr. Sugayo thinks that having Takao was a positive experience for him. Without him, he would have never thought of helping others like him.
