Redesigning my yard using permaculture methods is time-consuming and backbreaking, but it makes me feel good that my little property is becoming friendlier to the earth. This year I made a soil swale - a water reservoir that is supposed to keep rain water in the ground. When I acquired this property 12 years ago, I wanted to make a Japanese garden, but I postponed the project indefinitely. As I assumed that maintaining a Japanese garden in the dry climate of South Dakota would consume lots of water, I just could not bring myself to do it. When permaculture gardening was introduced to me a few years ago, however, I felt the calling. My progress is extremely slow, but in 10 years I envision to have a little oasis with lots of edible plants.

So glad to see how your yard is developing. I'm looking forward to watching it grow your food and turn into that Japanese garden you've wanted for so many years. BTW: I have more compost.

Very very slowly but definitely, I'm turning my yard into an edible-plants garden. Thank you, Ann, for your support.

I know the work is very hard, but you will have a wonderful, edible homestead before too long. I have another supply of compost.

It's been a long time, Othmar. It's nice to hear from you. After sweat and blisters I may not have my oasis of edible plants here. The Mcgilicuddy house restoration project offered to purchase my property last night, and I'm considering it. I'm realizing that having a large asset like a house is not good for my soul.

Yoko *Tenyoh, You'll hopefully will start a trend in Rapid, as we need to get rid of lawns. What a waste of water and they seemingly have to be cut each weekend.

I'm not sure about starting a trend, but my front yard is the only one in town that has potatoes and other veggies growing. Looking forward to meeting you in person tomorrow.
